Biography
John Adams Howell (1840–1918) devoted more than four decades to the United States Navy, rising through the ranks to become a respected officer whose innovations, including the Howell torpedo, reflected his keen mechanical mind and commitment to national defense. His service during the Civil War and afterward combined courage, intelligence, and a deep sense of duty to the sailors he led.
Beyond the deck, he was valued for his calm leadership and the mentorship he offered younger officers as the Navy adjusted to a new era. His memory lives on not only in Warrenton Cemetery but also in the many who benefited from his steady guidance and inventive spirit.
