John Chivington

Biography
John Chivington was a clergyman and soldier whose early life was devoted to preaching and to the Union cause during the Civil War. He led the 1st Colorado Volunteer Infantry with determination, believing he was defending the frontier at a time of national crisis.
In later years he returned to Colorado, continuing to preach and to maintain friendships with those he had served beside. When he died in 1894, Fairmount Cemetery received the remains of a man whose life reflected both the deep convictions and the complexities of his era.
