Biography

John Elias Williams (1871–1927) was an American missionary who devoted his career to religious work in Nanjing. As part of the wave of Western missionaries who came to China in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Williams worked to establish and maintain missionary institutions and communities.

Williams's long tenure in Nanjing spanned a period of tremendous change in China, from the final years of the Qing dynasty through the establishment of the Chinese Republic. His missionary work reflected the dedication of those who sought to serve Chinese communities through religious and educational endeavors.
