Biography

John H. Mitchell studied law and came to Oregon to build a legal practice that led to roles as United States district attorney and later to multiple terms in the United States Senate, where he fought for the state's interests.

He championed improvements to Oregon's railroads, river navigation, and military defenses, and he was known in Washington for persistently pressing the case that the Pacific Northwest deserved federal investment and respect.
