Biography
John H. Vincent, born in 1832, answered the call to the Methodist ministry and quickly became known for his stirring sermons and ardent belief in lifelong learning. He shepherded congregations, taught in theological schools, and remained a tireless advocate for temperance and Sunday school education.
In partnership with other leaders he co-founded the Chautauqua movement, bringing affordable lectures, music, and classes to rural families and inspiring citizens to seek knowledge, and in his final years he remained close to those institutions and now rests at Chestnut Hill Cemetery.
