John Hoppus

1789–1875 (age 86)

Biography

John Hoppus, a professor of logic and moral philosophy, championed inclusive education during his long service at the University of London. He wrote textbooks that aimed to make ethical reasoning accessible to students of all backgrounds and argued that learning ought not be limited by creed, which won him admiration across the city.

Beyond lectures he supported Sunday schools and study groups that welcomed working men, and he retired with the gratitude of those whom he helped to learn to read, write, and think clearly; his remains lie at Abney Park Cemetery, a fitting place for one who taught with patience.
