Biography

John Howard Harris, a Penn State alumnus who later guided the university through two decades of growth, championed industrial education and the importance of accessible learning. As president from 1885 to 1906, he oversaw new laboratories, expanded curricula, and strengthened alumni support, always reminding students that education and character go hand in hand.

He found joy in mentoring young scholars and in supporting state agricultural initiatives, believing the land-grant mission required both practical skills and broad-minded curiosity. His memory rests at Lewisburg Cemetery, a quiet testimony to a life spent inspiring others to pursue knowledge in service of community.
