Biography

John Huntington, born in 1832, was a shrewd entrepreneur whose ventures in banking, real estate, and industry helped grow Cleveland’s commercial prominence. He believed that business success brought with it the moral obligation to lift the community, and he backed hospitals, libraries, and other public institutions throughout his life.

His largest contributions—both during life and in his estate—helped build hospitals and cultural centers that continue to serve generations of Clevelanders. He rests at Lake View Cemetery, his memorial standing as a testament to the generosity he modeled.
