Biography

John McLoughlin Jr. was born in 1812 to the family of Dr. John McLoughlin and joined the Hudson's Bay Company as a fur trader. Working at Fort Vancouver, he navigated the complex relationships among company interests, Indigenous nations, and the growing number of American settlers on the Pacific Northwest frontier.

He died in 1842 and was buried at Fort Vancouver Military Cemetery, leaving behind a legacy tied to the early commerce and diplomacy of the Columbia River region. His efforts contributed to the stewardship of the fur trade at a moment of dramatic change.
