Biography

John S. Mosby, born in 1833, earned a lasting place in history as a military officer whose daring leadership of the independent cavalry unit known as Mosby’s Rangers captured the imagination of both compatriots and rivals during the Civil War. His ability to move swiftly by night and strike with precision made him a legendary figure across Virginia’s countryside.

After the conflict he returned to civilian life, practicing law, serving as a United States consul to Hong Kong, and promoting reconciliation among former foes. He died in 1916 and is laid to rest at Warrenton Cemetery, where visitors continue to honor his complex legacy.
