John T. Hayward

1908–1999 (age 91)

Biography

Admiral John T. Hayward was a naval aviator and strategist whose expertise helped guide the United States Navy through the Cold War’s most tense moments. As a steady hand in the face of technological change, he bridged the gap between carrier aviation, nuclear strategy, and the men and women who flew the missions.

He also served the wider naval community as an adviser, mentor, and advocate for rigorous safety and preparedness, always insisting that sound engineering and thoughtful leadership must go hand in hand. His legacy lives on in the doctrines he shaped and in the commanding presence he brought to every room, and Arlington National Cemetery now keeps him among those who preserved the republic.
