John Wellborn Root (1850–1891) rose as an architect whose imagination helped to define the spirit of Chicago, pairing rigorous craftsmanship with daring vision.

As partner to Daniel Burnham and friend to the city, he contributed to a skyline that still inspires awe, and his work and memory rest peacefully at Graceland Cemetery.
