John Woodward Philip

Biography

John Woodward Philip entered the United States Navy as a young man and served with distinction through both the Civil War and the Spanish–American War era, rising to command squadrons that guarded the nation’s fleets. His skill and resolve were evident in the blockading and reconnaissance duties he directed, and he earned the trust of officers and crews alike by insisting on professionalism and care for the men he led.

In later years he reflected on a career of duty and on the partnerships forged at sea, leaving a legacy of calm leadership and a firm moral compass, now commemorated at Green-Wood Cemetery.
