Biography

Josef Sokol was a writer whose literary contributions spanned much of the nineteenth century. Born in 1831, he was part of the Czech National Revival movement that sought to preserve and promote Czech language and culture during a period of foreign rule.

Sokol's work as a writer helped establish Czech literary traditions and national consciousness. He lived eighty-one years and was interred at Olšany Cemetery in 1912, remembered as a significant voice in Czech cultural history.
