Biography

Josef Stránský (1872-1936) led the New York Symphony and, for a time, the merged orchestra that became the New York Philharmonic, bringing a European perspective to American concert life and championing works by Dvořák, Debussy, and contemporary composers.

His steady leadership and commitment to musical excellence left a lasting imprint on New York's concert traditions, and Woodlawn Cemetery preserves the memory of the conductor and educator who guided many musicians.
