Biography

Joseph A. Gilmore (1811–1867) was a man of the nineteenth century whose life spanned the antebellum period through the Civil War and Reconstruction era. He came of age during a time of westward expansion and industrial growth, and witnessed the nation's struggle to preserve itself during its greatest crisis.

His fifty-six years of life allowed him to participate in the significant events and transformations of his time. He was interred at Mount Auburn Cemetery, where his memory is preserved among the notable figures of his generation and community.
