Joseph Egbert

Biography

Joseph Egbert (1807–1888) combined a merchant’s knowledge of shipping and trade with a dedication to public service, a blend that led to his election to Congress and to the respect of business partners along the East River. He brought those same steady habits back to private life after his term, guiding younger traders and staying rooted in the moral economy of his city.

He rests in Moravian Cemetery, where his reputation as a diligent public servant continues to inspire.
