Biography

Joseph Rosati was born in Italy and came to the United States as a missionary priest; in 1827 he became the first Bishop of St. Louis, tirelessly establishing churches, schools, and a seminary to serve the growing Catholic population.

He invited religious orders to the diocese, supported education for clergy and laity, and guided the faithful through epidemics and social change, and his tomb beneath the Basilica of St. Louis, King of France honors the sacrifices of this devoted shepherd.
