Joseph Roswell Hawley

Biography

Joseph Roswell Hawley, born in 1826, served as a Union general and then guided Connecticut through reconstruction as governor before taking a seat in the United States Senate a quarter-century later.

He defended civil rights and veterans' interests with clarity of purpose, and Cedar Hill Cemetery now preserves the resting place of the energetic statesman.
