Joshua Milne

Biography

Joshua Milne devoted his analytical mind to the emerging science of probability and actuarial tables during a lifetime of careful study and public service. As actuary to the Equitable Life Assurance Society, he compiled the influential Tables of Mortality that became a benchmark for insurance and pension work across the nation.

His exacting methods brought new trust to life assurance, and his colleagues remembered him as a precise and kindly mathematician whose work underpinned the security of countless families; his final resting place is here in Highgate Cemetery.
