Biography

Josiah Quincy III (1772–1864) was a prominent merchant and politician whose long life spanned the American Revolution and extended well into the nineteenth century. A man of considerable influence in New England, he participated in the commercial and civic life of his region during its transformation from a colonial economy to an industrial power.

His ninety-two years provided him with a unique vantage point on the development of the United States from its founding through the Civil War. As a respected merchant and public servant, Quincy left a lasting legacy in his community. He was laid to rest at Mount Auburn Cemetery, honored for his contributions to commerce, governance, and civic life.
