Biography

Julius Balke, Sr., born in 1830, arrived in Cincinnati at a time of great opportunity and brought his talents to bear on building trades and local philanthropy, always striving to make his adopted city more hospitable to families.

He treated his workers as part of an extended family and took pride in seeing the neighborhood flourish, and when he died in 1893 his passing was mourned by many who had benefitted from his steady leadership; he was interred at Spring Grove Cemetery.
