Julius Walker Adams

Biography

Julius Walker Adams (1812–1899) was a pioneering civil engineer whose career helped to shape early American infrastructure, from expanding railroad networks to the bridges and waterworks that supported growing cities. He championed rigorous engineering practice and mentored a generation of colleagues in the profession.

A founder of professional societies and an advocate for thoughtful planning, he is memorialized at Green-Wood Cemetery, where visitors may reflect on the bridges—literal and figurative—he helped to build.
