Kersey Coates was a merchant and banker whose investments in land, rail connections, and the elegant Coates House hotel strengthened Kansas City's ability to host travelers and entrepreneurs alike.

He also served on civic boards, championed parks and public improvements, and believed that the city's prosperity should be shared with the diverse population that called it home.
