Kittie Knox

1874–1900 (age 26)

Biography

Kittie Knox was one of the earliest African American women to ride with the League of American Wheelmen, and she pedaled confidently through the streets of Boston at a time when both her race and her gender were frequently used to bar her from sporting life. Her enthusiasm for cycling and her insistence on fair treatment made her a quiet but determined figure in the movement to make bicycling accessible to all.

She inspired young riders by competing in races, leading rides, and sharing her love of the open road, and even after her untimely passing she remained a beacon of courage for those who strive to overcome prejudice.
