Biography
LeRoy Pope Walker (1817–1884) was a lawyer whose knowledge of the Constitution and respect for public institutions shaped his brief but significant role as the first Confederate Secretary of War. Though the office proved a heavy burden, he returned to private practice with a renewed determination to promote harmony among his neighbors.
He spent his later years nurturing a legacy of civic responsibility, mentoring younger leaders and supporting churches and schools until his earthly labors drew to a close.
