Ludlow Griscom
1890–1959 (age 69)
ornithologist
Biography
Ludlow Griscom is remembered as the man who brought binoculars into the hands of ordinary birdwatchers, insisting that careful field identification could replace endless specimen collecting and helping to found modern ornithology in North America.
He taught at Harvard and advised bird clubs, editing journals and encouraging conservationists to map migration and habitat, so that his colleagues could build the scientific networks that still support bird study today.
