Lyman Cornelius Smith, born in 1850, turned a keen eye for mechanical precision into a thriving manufacturing enterprise that became synonymous with innovation in Syracuse, employing many and inspiring others to pursue engineering excellence.

With the wealth that came from building that enterprise, he returned generosity to the community through scholarships, library endowments, and civic improvements; he was laid to rest at Oakwood Cemetery, where his legacy of supporting education and public life remains evident.
