Biography
Mountstuart Elphinstone Grant Duff combined political service with scholarly curiosity, holding posts in India and Canada before returning to Parliament where he wrote freely on history and empire. His correspondence and books offered thoughtful reflections on governed peoples and the responsibilities of empire.
He continued to publish essays on literature and civic life, always emphasising the importance of understanding other cultures, and he took comfort in the tranquillity of Elgin Cathedral where he finally chose to rest; there his grave stands for a life devoted to bridging British and Indian worlds.
