Biography

Mamert Knapp, born in 1837, devoted his life to the craft of printing and the careful dissemination of information to his fellow citizens. His press became a trusted source of news and literature during a time of burgeoning national identity, and he took pride in the accuracy and clarity of every publication that left his shop.

Outside the pressroom he was a steady presence in his community, supporting the people who came to him for printed words and quietly encouraging young apprentices to learn the trade. His legacy rests not only in the pages he printed but also in the lives of those he guided as a mentor, and his memory is honored at Olšany Cemetery.
