Biography

Margaret Murray Washington was a pillar of Tuskegee Institute, where she guided domestic science training and inspired students to pursue lives of service and leadership. She believed that education, particularly for women, was the foundation for stronger families and communities, and she worked tirelessly to expand that vision.

Washington also helped organize national women’s clubs, encouraging African American women to advocate for their rights and for the needs of their neighborhoods. Her empowering spirit helped countless women find their voices and take action on issues of health, education, and justice.
