Biography

Maria White Lowell was known as the devoted spouse of poet James Russell Lowell and was herself a poet of considerable talent. Her literary abilities and intellectual companionship enriched the cultural life of her household and contributed to the vibrant literary circles of Boston. Though her own literary output was modest compared to her husband's, her verse demonstrated genuine sensibility and skill.

Maria's life was marked by her support for her husband's literary endeavors and her participation in the intellectual community of nineteenth-century Boston. Her early death at age thirty-two cut short a promising literary career, and her memory was preserved through burial at Mount Auburn Cemetery among the city's cultural elite.
