Martha Poland Thurston

Biography

Martha Poland Thurston (1849-1898) was admired for her warm demeanor and readiness to share comfort with neighbors who faced hardship. As a devoted matron of her household, she also supported the philanthropic undertakings that enriched Omaha's cultural life.

Those who welcomed her into their homes recall a woman who listened attentively and offered encouragement without expecting praise. Martha Thurston is remembered today at Prospect Hill Cemetery, where she joins a community of early pioneers.
