Martha Schofield

Biography

Martha Schofield, born in 1839, was a Quaker educator who dedicated her life to improving schools for freed people and nurturing a spirit of inquiry among youth in and beyond the Darby community.

Her efforts to secure books, teachers, and a disciplined yet affectionate learning environment remain a luminous example of how one person can widen the circle of opportunity, and her name rests honorably at Darby Friends Burial Ground.
