Biography

Mary Pickering (1793–1863) lived a life spanning seven decades of American history, from the early years of the republic through the Civil War era. Born in 1793, she witnessed the nation's founding principles being tested and refined through the crucible of historical events.

Pickering's long life allowed her to observe tremendous changes in American society and culture. Her burial at Mount Auburn Cemetery, one of America's most significant cemeteries, reflects the respect accorded to those who lived through the nation's formative and most challenging periods.
