Maxcy Gregg

Biography

Maxcy Gregg, born in 1814 in South Carolina, balanced scholarship and civic life as a professor of mathematics and a member of the state militia before the Civil War.

He raised a brigade for the Confederate service, leading it in the early victories and through the struggle at Fredericksburg, where he suffered mortal wounds in 1862; Elmwood Cemetery keeps his memory alongside other South Carolina sons.
