Banker and philanthropist

Biography

Morris Ketchum Jesup, a prominent banker and philanthropist of the Gilded Age, guided the growth of his financial institution with a steady hand while maintaining an abiding commitment to the welfare of others. His leadership helped facilitate the expansion of railroads and industry, yet he never lost sight of the families and communities that depended on those enterprises.

Jesup devoted much of his fortune to museums, scientific societies, and educational initiatives, ensuring that knowledge and opportunity would be accessible well beyond his own lifetime. His generous spirit endures in the foundations he supported, and he now rests in peace at Green-Wood Cemetery.
