Biography

Nathaniel Michler, born in 1827, was a graduate of the United States Military Academy who devoted his career to the Corps of Engineers; he surveyed rivers, planned fortifications, and brought methodical discipline to every assignment. His technical skill and calm leadership were prized during the Civil War when engineers shaped the Union's campaigns and later guided peacetime improvements.

He continued to serve his country after hostilities ended, overseeing river and harbor works and mentoring younger officers before his death in 1881, leaving a legacy of infrastructure that aided commerce and defense alike.
