Biography

Newton Edmunds answered a call to public service when he arrived in the Dakota Territory, becoming its second governor and championing measured progress for emerging settlements. He earned the trust of settlers and the federal government by working diligently to establish orderly government and to navigate complex relations with local Indigenous nations.

After leaving the governor's office he continued to serve the region as Indian agent, applying his experience to facilitate respectful communication, promote education, and support economic development throughout the territory.
