Biography
Newton Martin Curtis was born in 1835 in upstate New York and came of age as the nation confronted its greatest conflict. He quickly rose through the volunteer ranks, exhibiting cool judgment and relentless courage during the Civil War; his leadership at battles such as Fort Fisher earned him a medal and the enduring gratitude of those he led.
After mustering out of the Army he continued to serve the public, representing his home region in Congress and remaining a steadfast advocate for veterans and the forces of industry and progress. He remained deeply connected to his community until his passing in 1910 and is laid to rest in Ogdensburg Cemetery, where friends and family recall a life shaped by duty and humble service.
