classical scholar
Biography
Paul Shorey, born in 1857, spent his career as a classical scholar, most notably at the University of Chicago, returning again and again to the Platonic dialogues and insisting that their nuance and moral seriousness remain central to modern education.
He served as a mentor to numerous students, published essays that married philology with philosophy, and championed the study of the ancient world as a living conversation rather than a museum piece.
