General Paul X. Kelley, the 28th commandant of the Marine Corps, modernized the Corps in the 1980s by emphasizing readiness, quality of life, and the values of an all-volunteer force.
He remained a trusted adviser on national security and a steadfast advocate for Sailors and Marines, and his memory is honored at Arlington National Cemetery.
