Biography

Paul Zindel's narratives of turbulent adolescence and yearning families earned him the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and a string of beloved young adult novels, each grounded in the earnest, sometimes humorous, way he listened to teenagers who felt unseen. His plays such as The Effect of Gamma Rays... were renowned for marrying intelligence with compassion, giving stage actors the chance to explore both anguish and humor.

After moving from theater to novels, he continued to honor his readers by tackling topics many avoided, yet he never lost the tenderness that made him a trusted counselor to youth; those who met him remembered a man who valued imagination as a form of survival. He is laid to rest at Moravian Cemetery, leaving behind a legacy of gripping stories that still empower young readers.
