Biography

Powell Clayton, a Union general and Governor of Arkansas during Reconstruction, worked tirelessly to rebuild the state, promote public education, and protect the civil rights of newly freed citizens.

Later a U.S. senator and diplomat, he continued advocating for economic investment and justice even as partisan strife tested the young state, and he rests today at Arlington National Cemetery.
