Biography

Ralph Tyler Smith brought a sharp legal mind and a commitment to fairness to the halls of Illinois government. After earning his law degree, he served the people of his state as a legislator and, in 1969, as a United States Senator, carrying the voices of his constituents to the national stage.

He believed public service should lift up communities, and even after his Senate tenure he continued to counsel younger lawyers and civic leaders; those who mourn him at Sunset Hill Cemetery do so with gratitude for his steady leadership.
