Biography
Reuben Chapman (1799–1882) rose from a rural Alabama upbringing to become the state’s governor and a longtime congressman, shaping policy with a calm resolve and a deep respect for the people he represented. During his tenure he sought to balance regional rights with the responsibilities of national leadership, remaining devoted to the prosperity of the communities along the Tombigbee.
He lies at Maple Hill Cemetery, where Alabamians remember him as a steady hand during momentous times.
