Lawyer and U.S. Representative

Biography

Richard H. Stanton, born in 1812 in Kentucky, studied law and quickly earned respect as both an advocate and a newspaper editor, believing that justice could be advanced through both the bar and the press. He represented his state in the U.S. House of Representatives and drew notice for eloquent speeches that reflected the hopes and anxieties of a border state during tumultuous times.

After leaving Congress he returned to Maysville, where he continued to counsel neighbors and to support civic endeavors with the same calm conviction he brought to the national stage. He is buried at Maysville Cemetery, where he is remembered for balancing patriotism with compassion.
