Biography

Colonel Robert Gould Shaw led the 54th Massachusetts Regiment with conviction, inspiring African American soldiers to fight with honor and challenging the nation to live up to its ideals.

He fell at Fort Wagner alongside the men he commanded, and the Battery Wagner Mass Union Grave bears witness to the sacrifice of a leader who gave his life for freedom.
