Biography

Robert Mills, born in Charleston in 1781, trained under master builders and embraced classical ideals, traveling abroad to absorb the traditions of monumental architecture before returning to the capital.

He planned the U.S. Treasury, the Patent Office, and other federal edifices while laying out the original design for the Washington Monument, leaving timeless examples of civic order and mentoring the next generation of American architects before his death in 1855.
