Biography

Sir Robert Peel, born in 1788, twice served as Prime Minister and twice as Home Secretary, founding the Metropolitan Police, reorganizing the civil service, and steering the repeal of the Corn Laws in pursuit of national harmony.

He died in 1850, and the Church of St Peter in Drayton Bassett bears witness to the gratitude of the nation for a statesman whose reforms preserved order and renewed public confidence.
